Julia R. Gage, 55, rural mail carrier in Ontario CANANDAIGUA Julia R Gage of Pearl Street, who four years ago became the first woman in Ontario County to have a regular rural mail route, died Tuesday at Highland Hospital, Roches- ter. She was 55. Mrs. Gage died of cancer and had been battling the disease the past four years, said her husband, John. Mrs. Gage worked for the Canandaigua post office as a substitute rural mail carrier for 15 years, starting in 1962. She took over her own rural route in the Canandaigua area in 1977, her husband said. Gage said he was also a rural letter carrier and retired this past January. Canandaigua Postmaster Eleanor Carmichael said Mrs. Gage continued working until about three weeks before her death. "She was a great lady," Mrs. Carmichael said. " , A member of the First United Methodist Church, Canandaigua, Mrs. Gage worked in the Ontario ; County Public Health and Treasurer's offlcei before she joined the post office. Mrs. Gage is also survived by a son; Jonathan of Naples; a daughter, Mary Brown of Hurst, Texas; her mother, Clara Randall of South Bristol; and two grandsons. , v
