The damages claimed by the millers up to the time of the commencement of the actions amounted to $205, 000. They also claim a large amount iu addition for future damages. The commissioners, however, awarded them $95, -485. That sum is believed by many citizens to be an excessive amount. In conversation with a Democrat and Chrooiclk reporter yesterday George W.

Aldridge, of the executive board, said that the decision of the commissioners was arrived at in less than twenty-four hours after then-session was begun. The damages claimed," said Mr. Aldridge, "were excessive, and it is the opinion of many of our citizens that the award of the commissioners wTas excessive by at least $45, 000. I can not see how the money awarded can be added much zest to the occasion. He was of opinion that the award would be contested.

Chief Engineer Tubbs, of the water works department, when asked for his opinion, said that in his estimation the award was at least $40, 000 in excess of a just appraisal. He expressed the belief that the city would appeal to the general term for a more equitable award. 'As to raising the amount awarded for damages, said he, 'I cannot see how it can be done on the tax levy of this year. I presume the city could, however, raise the money on its notes, but the chances are that an appeal will be taken from the decision of the commissioners. In conversation with other citizens the reporter learned that the amount of the award was not only a surprise, but was entirely unsatisfactory.

Some of the claimants for damages have been, it is said, awarded twice as much as they were justly entitled to.
