When Mrs. Logan heard of the proposal to remove the guard she was deeply grieved, and said if the guard were removed the coffin, with her late husband's body in it, should be brought to her own home, Calumet place, there to slay in what is to be a memorial hall to her late husband until interred finally in Illinois. Of course her friends do not wish this to be done, as it would be a constant revival of Mrs. Logan's grief to have her husband's coffin always in sight.

Attention was first called to the work by the seniors, and a very pleasant group of pictures they are.

That presented by Miss II. L. Bryant is a view of Professor "VYiles's studio, and is a very creditablo piece of work. All the different objects seem to be brought out so clear, and the painting is well executed. Buttermilk Falls, which is so well known in this section, is truthiully portrayed on canvas by Miss Ida A.

Reports received at Bismarck show that the old chief drove all his enemies from their tents. He was determined to show his grief by the killing of his enemies, and they deserted their tents and fled for safety. The regular monthly meeting of the Rochester Society of Natural Sciences waa held last evening in the Central Library. The attendance was not large but the interest shown in the paper read by I'. C.

Reynolds, was very great. Mr. Reynolds opened his paper on Sources of Nitrogen in Plants and Auimals, by saying that as the modern novelist of character was concerned with the mere trait of his characters, rather.than with action or emotion, so the anatomical chemist was busied with the means by which men and nervous action was producod, rather than the end. Carbon, hydrogen and oxygen, he said, are so abundant and so active that presence in plants and animals is easily accounted for, but nitrogen is an element having so littlj disposition to join with others, that its presence in animal and vegetable organisms is not easily understood.
