The United State's currently Is dependent upon the British Dominions for nearly 80 per cent of its fine wool requirements, the council said, adding that the Australian wool for 1947 totals less than a billion pounds. Before the war the United States produced more than two-thirds of this country's fine wool requirements, but production here has declined 40 per cent while consumption is 70 per cent higher than at that time. "The suggestion that since fine wools are scarce and coarse wools are in supply, the wool textile Industry chance its traditional production pattern and the American public change its traditional fabric preference, is regarded with alarm by qualified textile merchandising experts," the Council said. It pointed out that while American textile requirements ar expected to be around a billion pounds in 191H, buyers and manu facturers will he competing for the Australian wool with European mills intent on making goods for export into world markets.
