Lantern Lowered In Well Causes Explosion Bergen A Bergen fanner and his hired man were reported in oiiUcal condition yesterday in Xlochestcr General Hospital as the result of an explosion of natural fras in a -well which seriously burned and hurled them 20 feet.

They are Clarence J. Arnold, about 55, operator of a Lake Road farm a mile south of here and Clair Taylor, 35, his employe. Both were seriously burned on the face, head, neck aims and chest. Additional transfusions were piven yesterday to supplement six friven over the weekend. Physicians said that if they react favorably to treatment in the next 72 hours they will have a poor! chance to recover.

Both Buffered severe fchock. The men haJ just completed repairs to a pump and had lowered a lantern to inspect their work when the occurred. Mrs. 'Arnold heard the explosion and found the men in a dazed condition about 20 feet from the well. 2Jr.

Taylor's shirt had been blown off by the force of the blast. She took them to a. Churchville physician who enlisted the aid of Sttite ToIice at the sub-station there to take them to the Rochester hospital. The men went to the well to re-fair an electric pump to provide water for livestock in a barn 200 feet away. Apparently they were on a large concrete block which covered the well, peering- through a two foot hole its center when the pas exploded.

The blast lifted the concrete block weighing: more than a ton, knocked the electric purr.p off and blew out soil around the top of the well. Nearby residents eaid Arnold, who operated the farm for 25 years, had put a lantern down the well on several previous occasions to inspect the pipe, but had never encountered gas in the well before. The blast occurred at 9:30 p. m. Friday.

The street was immediately blocked off and temporary repairs will be made. The cavein is approximately six feet long, from two to three 'feet wide and some four feet deep. Mrs. Charles S. Cooley, 199 East North said she was going to a nearby grocery store when she heard a rumbling and turned just in time to see a section between the old trolley tracks disappear.

A heavy truck had passed over the street just a few seconds before. During discussion on the construction of a new sewer in the street to service the Dixon public housing tract, city officials said the old sewer was practically surrounded by juicksand and it would be expensive to replace as well as holding forth the prospect of a more or less trouble in the future. The old rails had not been removed from this section of the street because officials felt they were needed as support for the pavement. East North Street for the last year has carried unusually heavy traffic during construction of the Seneca Ordnance Depot and the Sampson Naval Training Station. 4 Hit-Run Driver Hunted in Death Of Farmhand, 67 Perry Sheriff Lewis N.
