ROCHESTER DEMOCRAT AND CHRONICLE Thursday, January 24, 1980 Obituaries K. Purwin, began children's unit Dr. Kate Purwin, founder and former director of Rochester Psychiatric Center's children's unit, died yesterday at Genesee Hospital. She was 69. Miss Purwin, of 139 Greystone Lane, retired as director six years ago because of illness.

She was suffering from emphysema, said Marianne Purwin, Miss Purwin's sister-in-law. Born in Konigsberg, Germany, Miss Purwin came to Rochester in 1956 and completed her psychiatry studies at. the old Rochester State Hospital, forerunner of the center. She founded the children's clinic three years later, said Dr. Russell Barton, former center director.

"She was a tough, shrewd, wonderful woman. She founded the children's unit and worked for it selflessly with her whole life." Barton said the unit treats children with severe psychiatric illnesses. "When no one else was prepared to take a child's case on, Katie did it without compunction," he added Miss Purwin is survived by a brother, Bert of Rochester; and sister, Erna Sass of San Diego, Calif. Anthony Losapio, 59, noted photographer Anthony Losapio, award -winning nature photographer, died Monday while photographing wildlife in the Everglades. He was 59.

Losapio's death was caused when a blood clot in his leg dislodged, his daughter, Kathleen Knazek, said. Losapio lived with his wife, Grace, at 470 Biscayne Drive, Greece. Losapio was employed as a carpenter at Eastman Kodak Co. He began his photography eight years ago. Last month, he was awarded the Wilfred Kimber-Sam Vogan Award by the Photographic Society of America for improving the quality of nature photography: He also won sixth place in the society's international competition for nature photography, and in 1978 he was co-chairman of the Rochester International Salon of Photography, an annual national competition.

Besides his wife and daughter, Losapio is survived by another daughter, Linda Rasback of Hilton; and son, Carl of Rochester.
