She was 51. "She knew from the time she was 5 years old that she would teach school," said her sister, Ber-nice Meeks, of Rochester. "This was a gift from God." Born in Sanford, Mrs. Black received a bachelor's degree from Bethune Cookman College, in Daytona Beach, Fla. She came to Rochester in 1968 and received a master's degree from Nazareth College in 1975.

Mrs. Black had taught special education at schools in Florida and at several Rochester schools, including School Nos. 4 and 17 and the former School No. 3. Most recently she taught at School No.

29 for about the last seven years, but her illness forced her to retire in March. "It was very obvious the expertise she had for special education students," said Karen Yaniga, a longtime friend who teaches at School No. 29. "I was impressed with her compassion, her sense of strength and dignity." Yaniga said Mrs. Black was very special to her students, and some of her ex-students volunteered to be pallbearers at her funeral when they found out about her death.

Mrs. Black was one of the founders of the Christian Friendship Church, a Baptist church in Henrietta, her sister said. When her neighbors were concerned about the long distance to the nearest Baptist church, Mrs. Black held a meeting in her home and the group helped establish Chris-' tian Friendship. Along with her sister, Mrs.

Black is survived by her husband, Robert Black of Henrietta? three sons, Robert, Kelvin, and Dwayne, all of Henrietta; three PASSAGES Walter Burroughs, 88, former publisher of the Orange Coast Daily Pilot, died Sunday in New- port Beach, following a stroke. Born in Bridgewater, S.D., his family moved to ma, when he was a boy; InTacoma, Burroughs, then 11,, printed his own neighborhood newspaper and sold them for a penny each. He worked for the now-defunct Universal News ServicCarid the Seattle Post-ln telligencer. In addition to his du-t ties as publisher of the Daily Pl-i lot until 1962, Burroughs served as owner and publisher of the Costa Mesa Globe Herald and Seal Beach Pilot and was presk dent of Sigma Delta Chi, the na-i tional journalists' society. In 1981, he was honored as Or- ange County citizen of the year.

William Crawford Eddy, 87, who developed television transmis-i sion and helped establish Chicago's first TV station, died Saturday in Michigan City, following a lengthy illness. Alan Morrell Donald Kolesnik, gas station owner Donald W.

Kolesnik, owner of Kolesnik Service Station, died Aug. 31 of a heart attack at his business. He was 59. Mr. Kolesnik, who began the Monroe Avenue station in 1952, was in partnership with his son, Don, and son-in-law, John Consul.

"My brother always had a dream of opening a business there he won a couple of trips from Sunoco for the appearance of the station over the years," said Sister Elaine Kolesnik. "He was a good and fair businessman and a wonderful family man," she said. Mr. Kolesnik was born in Rochester and raised on Willite Drive. He showed a talent for repairing things at an early age, said relatives, and by eighth grade was doing odd jobs at a neighborhood service station.

He attended St Andrew's School and graduated in 1948 from Aquinas Institute. Both in business and in his personal life, Mr. Kolesnik's "would do anything for anybody," said his son, Don. "My Dad, when he walked into a room, was the life of the party. He made everyone feel good." Mr.

Kolesnik was a member of the Rochester Gasoline Dealers Association, the Moose Club and St Ambrose Church, Besides his sister and son, Mr. Kolesnik is survived by his wife of 37 years, Marie; two daughters, Theresa Consul and Karen Koles- nik, both of Rochester; a brother, Robert, of Oxnard, and a Kevin Hickt periments in the transmission of television pictures. During a two-year period, the Farnsworth team, including Eddy, developed what is known as the sawtooth scanning television transmission. Eddy later went to work for RCA, creating special effects and lighting for early telecasting. In 1941, he helped set up the Chicago station WBKB-TV, all aspects of the business.

Jacob B. Engle, 86, an Associated Press reporter and editor for 41 years, died Thursday In Washington, D.C. Engle joined the AP as a reporter In Topeka, on Jan. 3," 1927, and served there and in Wichita be-: fore transferring to Washington in 1933. Before retiring in 1968, he covered 18 Republican and Democratic national conven- tions.

A native of Abilene, Engle graduated from the University of Kansas in 1925. Before joining the AP, he was city editor of The Pratt (Kan.) Tribune and the Hutchinson Herald.
