There also is the kind of disloyalty that comes about when you and some co-workers get together after work at the local pub and bad-mouth the boss. You heap criticism on him, blaming him for everything from the hole in the ozone layer to the Beatles' breakup. Now, you may not believe your colleagues would ever rat you out to the boss, but it's a fact of life that gossip thrives in the working world.

That means the chances are good that someone will repeat what you said and before you know it, the boss learns of your harsh words. You can bet that the next time a bad mood hits the boss, there won't be anywhere for you to hide. Always loving what the boss loves. If the boss is a big fan of organization, keep your workspace neat and organized. Offer to reorganize messy projects or set up a new system to keep better track of customer orders.

While it's clear that anything and everything you say can be held against you, the same is true for e-mails or personal blogs. RBC Dain Rauscher MEMBER NYSESIPC Avoid being target Establish yourself as ANITA BRUZZESE GANNETT NEWS SERVICE Let's face it: Whether your day is good or bad pretty much depends on whether the boss is having a good day or a bad day. If he or she is having a crummy day, chances are you will, too.

But being at the whim of another person's moods can be stressful. Let's say the boss is fighting with his significant other about something or is angry at another department head. He's cranky, snapping at everyone and finding fault with even the simplest things. Why, you may ask yourself, does everyone have to suffer for the boss's problems? Shouldn't the boss just suck it up and stop taking out his bad moods on innocent human beings? In a perfect world, yes. Bosses, however, are human.

When things go wrong in their world, no matter how hard they may try, everyone is going to feel the pinch. That's why it's so important that you protect yourself from such bad moods as much as possible. How do you do that? By understanding what makes him happy and what ticks him off. You learn what matters to him, and what you can do to make his life easier. The key is establishing yourself as a friend, not a foe, in the boss's mind.

That way, when the boss's mood turns ugly, you're less likely to suffer. Some key things to remember include: Understanding that bosses hate disloyalty.
