Today's Top Singing Sensation 9ff3 The Di Morro Sisters! liiSf Twins Evelynl Comedian Max Cooper DDIE" Fabulous Leon and Democrat and Chronicle TJ Rochester, N. DO Feb. 6, 1965 '36 Hours' Tauf, Tidy Spy Yam By JEAN WALRATH The new spy picture at the Paramount, "36 Hours," wasn't made to be believed (or somebody is crazy) but while it runs its course the viewers is too intrigued to care.

The fantastic idea on which the story is built is this: With D-Day approaching, the Nazis search out an American Army intelligence officer in Spain, drug him and drag him off to Germany where they have set up a hospital and staffed it completely with English speaking persons in order to trick the captive into talking. Considering that the Nazis were notorious for anything but their delicacy in interrogation of prison- ers, the idea has to be swallowed like a whole goose egg. Yet, they've made a good game of it for the movie that stars James Garner as the American, Rod Taylor as a German doctor who looks and talks American, and Eva Marie Saint as a nurse assigned to the care of the "patient." TIIE OBJECT OF the painstaking enemy is to convince the American that the war has been over for years, that he is emerging from amnesia and that anything he recalls about D-Day plans is all history. The Germans are defeated, he is told, and he will learn all the details in time. There's a time-limit on the scheme.

If the doctor 1 hasn't succeeded within 36 hours in getting the man to talk, the S.S. guards will take over the interrogation and God help him. There's a Nazi suspicion I that the American is a bright man who may catch on, and the Nazis, depicted as somewhat stupid eggs, though crafty, can't put their trust in a mere doctor who lives by his mind. )( IT'S A FAIRLY TIDY and taut plot for all that, and the spy story audiences who have been waiting for this kind of movie will surely go along with it respect- fully at least until the inevitable ending begins to shape up. There's really only one way, as all mo- viemakers seem to know, to bring such a story to an exciting end.

Garner, completely turn-ing his back on comedy for this part, performs with poise and perfect appearance as the American off i- cer but Taylor takes the honors for his portrayal of an American-born German doctor in charge of the bizarre project a loyal non-Nazi soldier outwardly relaxed and sympathetic, inwardly decent but aware of the brutal consequences if he should fail. Miss Saint is fine as a nurse released from a concentration camp for the assignment. Werner Peters is right as the Nazi heavy, a shade restrained.
