PASSAGES Martin Ritt, the maverick director cf Norma Rae, The Front and The Long Hot Summer, who once was blacklisted in Hollywood, died yesterday of complications from heart disease.

The director of 25 films and 250 television shows died at Santa Monica Hospital Medical Center, satd Chuck Warn, spokesman for the Directors' Guild of America. Details on the cause of death were not given. His family said he was 76 years old, Warn said, but studio and other biographies listed him as 70. Ritt, who often set his films in the South, never shied from controversial issues, such as racial prejudice in Sounder, blacklisting in The Front, and labor rights in The Molly Maguires and Norma Rae. The son of Jewish immigrants, Ritt started as an actor in New York in the late 1930s.

After serving in the U.S. Army during World War II, he worked in television until he was blacklisted in the 1950s. He made his first feature, Edge of the City, with Sidney Poitier in 1957. One year later, he filmed Faulkner's The Long Hot Summer and The Sound and the Fury. In 1984, Ritt traded in his director's cap to play basebail manager Burly De Vito in Neil Simon's comedy The Slugger's Wife.

In 1989, Ritt directed his last movie, Stanley and Iris, which starred Jane Fonda and Robert DeNiro. Max J. Bellest, 87, former fashion consultant and licensing editor for Pierre Cardin, died Nov. 28 at Bellevue Hospital Center. He lived in Manhattan.

He died of complications of pneumonia, said Andrew Wargo, a business colleague for 20 years. Bellest joined the staff of Pierre Cardin in 1978 and remained with it until 1985, when he retired. He was responsible for developing the Cardin business in the United States, which included 30 companies manufacturing men's, women's and children's clothing. Michael J. Brody, 56, a professor of pharmacology at the University of Iowa who was an expert on hypertension, died Monday near Cairns, Australia, where he was attending a conference on high blood pressure.

He lived in Iowa City, Iowa. The cause of death has not been determined, a spokeswoman for the university said. Brody was also head of the Specialized Center for Research In Hypertension at the University of Iowa and associate director of the Cardiovascular Center there. He was known for his work in showing the role played by the central nervous system in the development of hypertension. He was the recipient of many awards, including the 1990 Ciba Award for Hypertension Research.

Dee Clark, 52, a rock 'n' roll singer who had a string of hits in the '60s including Raindrops and Hey Little Girl, died Friday, apparently of a heart attack, police said. Clark, who had been ill for several years, was found dead at the Knight's Inn in Smyrna, said Cobb County police Lt. Ed Clack. A Chicago native, Clark's career began in the early 1950s with the Hambone Kids, a rhythm and blues group. He later formed a singing group called the Kool Jets.

Clark was best known for his recording of Raindrops, which sold 2 million copies in 1961. David C. Carter, 61, the president of the United States Beet Sugar Association since 1975 and a founding member of several trade groups, died Nov. 29 at his home in Derwood, northwest of Washington. His wife, Alice, said he died of cancer.

Ed Cates, 62, a former Jackson, City Council member and retired Army officer whose attempt to fake his own death earned him national attention and a long prison term, died Sunday of natural causes. Cates was a city commissioner from 1969 to 1973. He was serving a 40-year-sentence at the Mississippi State Penitentiary at Parchman for manslaughter and embezzlement. Cates' arrest in October 1983 received national attention when he was accused of faking his death. The arrest came about five months after I Mississippi Highway patrolmen found what they believed to be Cates' charred remains in car.

i He received a 20-year prison sentence in January, 1984, for embezzling $223,336 from a for- mer corporate client, the Hinds County Co-Op AAL in Raymond. In February 1984, he was handed another 20-year sentence after pleading guilty to manslaughter in the death of the man found in his car. Jack J. Catton, 70, a retired Air Force general who led the first B-29 bomber groups to the Mariana Islands for World War II bombing missions over Japan, died Tuesday at March Air Dec. 7, 1990.

Area Deaths Outside Monroe County Beggs, Norman. NEWARK: Age 61 of Newark. Died, Saturday, December 8 at the Newark Wayne Hospital. Mr. Beggs was born on Jan.

26, 1929, in Niagara Falls, NY; Son of Harrison and Jenny Lee Beggs of Lewiston, NY. Mr. Beggs is survived by his mother and brother Gerald Beggs, both of CT; also survived by many friends. No Calling Hrs. Funeral and burial at the convenience of the family.

In 1946 and 1947, Catton took part in the first two atomic weapons tests in the Pacific. He also flew combat missions against North Korea. Catton flew throughout his 34-year military career, logging 15,000 flying hours in such aircraft as the C-141 and C-5 cargo planes, every operational bomber from the B-17 through B-52s and several fighter aircraft including the F-15. He was a charter member of the Aviation Hall of Fame. He retired from the Air Force in 1974 and went to work for Lockheed Aerospace retiring as a senior vice president in 1984.

A. Randle Elliott, 76, a specialist in international law and a retired college president, died Dec. 1 at the Coble Health Care Center in Durham, N.C. He had homes in Millbrook, Dutchess County, and Durham. He died of pneumonia, his family said.

Elliott was president of Hood College in Frederick, from 1961 to 1971 and of Bay Path College in Long-meadow, from 1971 to 1979. The Rev. Albert S. Foley, 78, a Roman Catholic priest known for his civil rights activities, died Dec. 2 in Mobile, Ala.

Foley was professor emeritus and director of the Human Relations Center at Spring Hill College where he worked more than 50 years. He entered the Society of Jesus in 1929. He was ordained in 1942. Foley also served on the faculties of St. Louis University, Loyola University of Los Angeles, Our Lady of the Lake College in San Antonio, Texas, Fordham University, University of Michigan and the University of Chicago.

He mounted a campaign against the Ku Klux Klan in the South and conducted sessions on race relations and human relations throughout the South. Foley wrote many articles and books, including Dream of an Outcaste, a sequel to his best -seller Bishop Healy: Beloved Outcaste.
