She taught first- through eighth-grades with the exception of second-grade at the following elementary schools in the Rochester Catholic Diocese: St. Charles Borromeo, 1951 to 1954; St. Vincent's in Corning, 1954 to 1955; St. John's in Clyde, 1955 to 1960; St Andrew's, 1960 to 1962; Holy Cross, 1962 to 1966; and St. Cecilia's, 1966 to 1968.

She was principal at Our Lady of Mercy Elementary School on Denise Road from 1968 to 1979. She enjoyed serving a parish and had stated that she was energized by the congregation, prayer and continuing education. She was involved with hospital visits, spiritual growth, Bible groups, the baptismal program and occasionally preached at Masses. She formed the Adult Religious Education Committee and Mothers and Others, a group for women, soon after coming to the parish, Reif said. Sister Quinn graduated from Our Lady of Mercy High School in 1948, earned an associate's degree in applied science from Catherine McAu-ley Junior College in 1954 and her bachelor's in education from Nazareth College in 1958.

She did advanced studies at Nazareth, the State University College at Brockport and Elmira College. From 1972 to 1973, he was president of the American Association for Dental Research. He graduated with his D.D.S. degree from Northwestern University in 1938 and his M.S. in 1940.

He held a faculty appointment at Northwestern and then moved to Tufts University in Boston, where he became professor and chairman of the department of oral pediatrics and oral diagnosis. After a period as chairman of the department of periodontology of the University of Minnesota, he came to Eastman Dental Center as the founding chairman of the department of periodontology in 1957. In 1981, he moved to the Chicago area and became a consultant to the Office of Scientific Affairs of the American Dental Association. Dr. Zander was associated with the National Institutes of Health from 1947 to 1987.

He received honorary doctoral degrees from Georgetown University, the University of Zurich in Switzerland and the University of Gothenburg in Sweden. Dr. Zander is survived by his brother, Dr. Ernst Zander, New York City; two daughters, Elizabeth "Beth" Hill, Naples, and Christine Zander, Denver; two sons, Dr. John Zander, Springfield, 111., and Mark Zander, Scranton, and nine grandchildren.

McCrank Sister Quinn, St. Rita's Parish Sister Marie Martin Quinn, a Sister of Mercy, died Nov. 28 in Lourdes Hall of a brain tumor, the sisters' infirmary at the Mercy Motherhouse, 1437 Blossom Road.

She was 61. Sister Quinn, who had been the pastoral assistant at St Rita's Parish in Webster since 1979, worked up until two weeks ago, when her brain tumor was diagnosed. Helmut A. Zander, a world renowned scientist, educator, clinician and founding chairman of the department of periodontology at the Eastman Dental Center, died Saturday in Naples, Fla. He was 79. Born in Germany, Zander re ceived his early education and his dental degree from the University of Wurzburg and immigrated to the United States in 1935. He published more than 150 scientific papers throughout his Dr.

His early work related to pediatric dentistry, and his studies on bacteria and the prevention of tooth decay and pulp reactions to various filling materials are still regarded as classics. His later work, focusing on periodontal tissues and disease, laid the foundation for much of modern periodontal therapy. Dr.

Zander was chairman of the center's department of periodontology from 1957 to 1977 and senior scientist until 1981. He also held appointments at the University of Rochester as professor of clinical dentistry and dental research, as acting chairman of dental research from 1979 to 1981 and as professor emeritus since 1981. "Helmut was a giant in our field," said Dr. William D. McHugh, director of the Eastman Dental Center, in a prepared statement.

"His work made a significant contribution to the practice of dentistry. There are few men that equal his stature and the Dental Center is proud to have been his professional home for 25 years."
