STATE ROCHESTER, NEW YORK DemocratandChronicle.com a glance NEW YORK CITY Malcolm X's kin wants forgiveness Malcolm X's grandson, who at 12 set a house fire that killed the slain civil rights leader's wife, said he remembers asking for a sign of forgiveness from his dead grandmother. In an interview with The New York Times published Saturday, Malcolm Shabazz, now 18 and imprisoned for attempted robbery, described talking to the dead Betty Shabazz in his cell. "I just wanted her to know I was sorry and I wanted to know she accepted my apology, that I didn't mean it," he told the Times. "But I would get no response, and I really wanted that response." Shabazz is serving a year sentence at a prison in Comstock, N.Y., for setting the blaze on June 1, 1997 that severely burned and eventually killed his 61-year-old grandmother. The second phase of the investigation starts this month, with tests of soil and groundwater on Erie Street, between Perry and Beach streets. George Pataki, who is rapidly becoming a major fundraiser for the national GOP, has put his team back to work on events next month for the Republican Governors Association and the Bush-Cheney reelection effort. On Oct. 9, Pataki is hosting first lady Laura Bush at a a-person reception at the Rainbow Room at Rockefeller Plaza in New York City to raise money for her husband's re-election bid.

"Since early money is so critical, we ask that you make your commitment now and begin fulfilling your pledge as soon as possible," Pataki said in a message to potential donors. Those who pledge to raise $50,000 or more are named event "general chairmen." Pataki aides said Friday they didn't know how much the Laura Bush event would raise. In June, Pataki was the driving force behind a Manhattan fundraiser for the president that raised $4 million. That Bush-attended event helped propel Pataki into the ranks of "Bush Rangers" an elite group for along Erie Street.
